| THE BUCKET GAME Sponsored by www.discounteddecor.com In today's conservation-conscious culture, anything we can do to reuse or recycle items in lieu of throwing them away is considered a valuable practice; thus, we bring you "The Bucket Game." It's a great way to entertain the kids while helping them develop creative, color, and counting skills - all while using "stuff" we already have. Briefly, you (kids included, of course) are going to actually make the game in order to play the game. The idea is for everyone to make their own bucket to fill with goodies collected on a path taken in amounts determined by a roll of a die. (Phew.) This project can be as involved or as simple as you wish to make it; for instance, each step can be a creative effort - or not. But let's get started so that it can all make sense. The first step is to create the bucket. Small yogurt containers make a great bucket. Take a piece of aluminum foil large enough to cover the entire cup inside and out and do just that. Next, take a strip of aluminum foil and roll it in a cylindrical fashion to make the handle. Glue it to either side of the rim of the bucket. If you have air duct connector tape to use instead of glue, that's a great alternative because it looks like aluminum foil and blends right in! Next, decorate. Now we get to the fun part. The next step is to make the game board itself, which will be the path. A good, sturdy piece of card stock or cardboard is a great medium to use for this, but plain paper will do just fine. Just make a winding path of connecting squares at least 1 x 1" and then feel free to add any decorations to the game board outside of the squares. If time is short, you can use a checkerboard or even an old calender page for the game board - the sky's the limit. Lastly, pick a theme and make the game pieces. In this case, we'll use drops of water for our bucket. Just cut small pieces of squares to fit inside those on the game board and draw any item you choose on each piece. Be sure to make enough for each square and use the same item for each piece, but vary the amount per square. For instance, the squares should have 1, 2, or even 3 drops of water on each one. Again, you can use the squares on an old calender or cut them from old birthday or holiday cards… Be sure to make a square for each child with their name on it as well so they can mark their place on the board. Again, each square on the board should have a game piece. A shortcut can be taken here as well if necessary. You can use items such as pebbles from the yard, candy, or whatever you have lying around. That's all there is to it. Now it's time to play. Each child in turn should roll a single die and move that many squares, replacing the game piece with his or her name piece and placing the game piece in his or her bucket. The winner is determined as follows: The game is over whenever someone reaches the final square either by the exact amount needed on the die or by rolling more than what is needed. For instance, if 3 is needed to land on the final square, but a 4 is rolled, that is more than what is needed, so the child will stop at 3 and the game is over. Each child should count the total number of drops in their bucket. Whoever has the most drops wins. Have fun with this. The game board and pieces can be specialized to a holiday or birthday party, a favorite pet or sport or cartoon, whatever. It's a great way to encourage creativity, learning, and a great way to spend time together. And the best part - it's all recyclable! Enjoy!
